Exploring Yerevan in January

Winter is usually associated with cozy evenings, reading books, watching TV and waiting for Christmas magic. But wait, what about breaking the stereotypes? Yes, it’s time to make winter the period of new discoveries and exploration of non-standard travel destinations. What about visiting Armenia?

Does it snow in Armenia in winter?

It depends on the year, but Yerevan is not usually snowy in December. The city is mainly covered with snow in January and February. However, make sure that you have warm clothes and be ready for cold weather (winter temperature in Yerevan is -5°C and colder). Here is what you can do in Yerevan, if you have only a couple of days.

Have a walk in the city center

Like any other city, Yerevan is decorated with colorful and beautiful lights, garlands and is prepared for New Year and Christmas in December and January. Almost all museums, shops, cafés, restaurants and wineries are located in the center of Yerevan. So, if you are fond of walking, you can have a stray in the streets of the city center, gazing at beautiful architecture, finding some hidden gems and just feeling the festive mood. And all this you can do without using a bus or a taxi, because Yerevan streets are tiny and are very close to each other.

Buy traditional souvenirs

While walking in the city center many little souvenir shops will catch your eye. Do not hesitate to enter one of them, there you can find many national and traditional souvenirs, handicrafts. By the way, most of the souvenir shops are located in one of the central streets of Yerevan Abovyan street.

For souvenir enthusiasts there is also an open-air souvenir market near the Republic Square: Vernissage. Here you can find almost everything: traditional, handmade jewelry, taraz (Armenian national dress), Armenian national musical instruments, carpets, etc. From here you can take a little piece of Armenia.

Skate on the ice rink

In winter months one of the lakes located in the center of Yerevan, Swan Lake is converted into an ice rink. The lake is situated near the Opera House and is a very beautiful place to skate with locals, breath fresh air, enjoy wonderful music and have fun. Skates can be rented near the lake.

There is another ice rink, located in a spectacular and amusing entertainment place called Winter park. It will take you 20-30 minutes to get there by car from the city center (you can take a taxi, which is rather affordable in Yerevan or you can take a bus).

Try national cuisine

What else is needed for real foodies? Of course to try Armenian rich and specific cuisine.  There are many cafe's, restaurants, where you can taste Armenian national dishes. One of the most famous national Armenian dish is dolma (vine leaves stuffed with meat). Dolma is common in various countries, but the Armenians have a special way of dolma making. Vegetarians will also like this dish, as the Armenians also make pasuts dolma (staffed with various cereals and rice). So be ready to add it in the list of your favourite dishes.

Have a glass of wine

After a walk you can have some wine. In this case the best option is Saryan street.  On this street you will find a lot of tiny wineries, which will impress you with the variety of wine selection.  Here you can taste both local and imported wines and of course have a delicious meal.
