The Cableway Experience
Wings of Tatev (TaTever in Armenian) holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop double track cable car. It is located in Syunik region, about 250 km south from Yerevan. Built in 10 months and installed in 2010, the cableway is fairly new but has already attracted more than 100,000 visitors annually. It connects Halidzor station to Tatev Monastery and lasts for about 12 minutes. It goes over the Vorotan gorge and reaches its maximum altitude of 320 meters. Part of Tatev Revival Project, Wings of Tatev is non-commercial, as its profit goes towards the development of the region and the restoration of Tatev Monastery.
Tatev Monastery
Once you have reached to Tatev Monastery, expect to witness a breathtaking view all around. This 9th century monastery is one of the staples of tourism in Armenia and the ultimate destination for Syunik region. The complex holds a big history inside its walls, namely operating Tatev University in the 14-15th centuries.
If you go to the Monastery complex, be sure to pay a visit to Dzit-Han Museum and Photo Exhibition, where you will see an old oil press facility made in the 17th century. This interactive museum will take you through the steps of how the facility worked, and the purpose it served during its time.
