DAY BY DAY

day 1
Day 1: Arrival

Arrival to Armenia. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan.

day 2
Day 2: City tour - Matenadaran - Echmiadzin - Zvartnots - Yerevan
Walking approx. 2 hrs. Driving approx. 60 km, 1.5 hrs.

After breakfast we are going to walk in the streets of Yerevan to discover the hidden corners of this old and new city. We will visit the richest depository of the Armenian manuscripts – Matenadaran, collected since the 5th century, when the Armenian alphabet was created.

Drive to The Holy See of Echmiadzin Cathedral (UNESCO Heritage) – one of the first Christian buildings in the world, founded in 301-303, when Armenia officially adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301.

On the way back we will visit the archaeological site of Zvartnots, where Zvartnots temple (7th century) is situated (UNESCO Heritage). Drive to Yerevan. Overnight in Yerevan. (B/-/-)

day 3
Day 3: Yerevan - Sanahin - Haghpat
Walking approx. 2 hrs. Driving approx. 190 km, 4 hrs.

After breakfast at the hotel we will move to the North of Armenia to the Monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin (10th century) inscribed in the UNESCO Heritage list. After a tour in Haghpat Monastery, we will walk to Debed Canyon enjoying the stunning nature.

Then the bus will take us to Sanahin, another unique architectural complex. Overnight in Haghpat. (B/-/-)

day 4
Day 4: Haghpat - Dilijan - Goshavank - Sevan
Walking approx. 2.5 hrs. ↑150m, ↓300m. Driving approx. 180 km, 3 hrs.

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Dilijan, which gained the name “Little Switzerland” of Armenia, due to its rich nature and mountains. Drive to Lake Parz, from where we will walk to Goshavank Monastery.

Afterwards, we will lead our way to Lake Sevan – the pearl of Armenia, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Overnight in Sevan. (B/-/-)

day 5
Day 5: Sevan - Noratus - Selim Pass - Karahunj - Goris
Driving approx. 270 km, 4hrs.

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to the medieval Noratus cemetery, where we will find the highest concentration of khachkars (cross-stones) in Armenia. Afterwards, head to Selim Caravanserai, which used to be a place of stay for the merchants on the Silk Road.

Our next stop is the oldest observatory in the world, Karahunj or the Armenian Stonehenge, 3500 years older than the Stonehenge in England and 3000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids.

Drive to Goris, one of the oldest towns in the South of Armenia. Overnight in Goris. (B/-/-)

day 6
Day 6: Goris - Khndzoresk - Tatev - Devil’s Bridge - Jermuk
Driving approx. 170 km, 3 hrs . Kndzoresk/Devil’s Bridge: 4.5 hrs., 11.5 kms., ↑300m, ↓560m.

After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Khndzoresk. We will walk in Khndzoresk cave village, passing by the edge of a deep canyon. Our next stop will be Halidzor, from where we will take the longest aerial tramway in the world, called Tatever, and reach one of the most wonderful monasteries in Armenia – Tatev. Afterwards we will walk to the Devil’s Bridge, a fascinating natural beauty. Drive to Jermuk for overnight. (B/-/-)

day 7
Day 7: Jermuk - Noravank - Areni - Khor Virap - Yerevan
Walking approx. 1.5 hrs. Driving approx. 200 km, 3 hrs.

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Amaghu village and start hiking to Noravank Monastery, the only two-floor church in Armenia. From here we will drive to Areni Village. In this area the oldest wine cellar (approx. 6000 years) was discovered. In the Areni wine factory we will taste some Armenian wine. Drive to Khor Virap, the closest point to the Biblical Mount Ararat. Overnight in Yerevan. (B/-/-)

day 8
Day 8: Yerevan - Garni - Geghard - Yerevan
Walking approx. 2.5 hrs. ↓100 m, ↑110m. Driving approx. 90 km, 1.5 hrs.

After breakfast we will head to Garni, the only preserved Pagan Temple in the whole Caucasus area (1st century), from which we will hike to the breathtaking Symphony of Stones and back. We will continue our way to the gorgeous Geghard Monastery, which will be awaiting us. Part of the monastery was carved right inside the cliff in the 4th century. Geghard is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Drive back to Yerevan. Overnight in Yerevan. (B/-/-)

Day 9: Departure

What is the Currency in Armenia?

The national currency of Armenia is ‘dram,’ which is a word from the 12 century with Greek origin meaning ‘money’. Dram was actually first issued in 1993. There are both coin denominations and banknotes. The coin denominations come in 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 coins. The banknotes exist in the following denominations: 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 50,000 and 100,000.

What Money Should You Take With You in Armenia?

You can easily bring cash in Rubles, euros or dollars. The money exchange stops are very easy to find. It is also important to have some small denominations on you, such as 1,000 drams and/or some coins, they come in handy when using transport buying water or something else especially in the regions and small towns.

What is the weather like in Armenia?

Armenia’s climate is very unique and distinct due to many factors. The summers in Armenia can be very hot with a temperature ranging from 28-35° C (83-95° F) and the winters are moderately cold, with a temperature ranging from 5-7° C (23 to 19° F). Rains are not very common in Armenia and as a result the humidity in the air is quite low. All of this is due to the fact that the country is located in the mountains and has a very small portion that is located below 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level. The temperature in regions is usually slightly lower than in Yerevan, so while traveling to areas in the regions it is better to pack a few warmer clothes than what you are already wearing.

The best season for visiting Armenia and getting the chance to experience its full beauty is from April to October. What concerns the weather, it is quite hot in Armenia during summer with a temperature ranging from 28 – 35 °C and above.
